Installing the EPPT-Trial

[These instructions may appear unduly long and involved, but in practice it takes less than a minute to Install the EPPT-Trial. The explicit instructions should reassure new users that the installation is proceeding properly. Requirements: PC XP or Mac OS X (preferably Tiger) with at least 256 MB of memory (more memory, sometimes much more, is necessary if you are processing large images); Java 5; and a password, obtained by e-mailing either ionut@ms.uky.edu or kiernan@uky.edu. After the initial installation, updating is quick and easy. (Note: For the time being, we are restricting password access to participants in the listed Trial projects, while we enter a new phase of development. Click here if you are not a Trial owner and wish a Guest pass.) The complete source codes for EPPT are available on Sourceforge at http://sf.net/projects/eppt. ]

1. For PC, download the Installer from http://beowulf.engl.uky.edu/~eft/binaries/eclipse3.2EPPT-trial-installer-20060501.exe. For Mac, download the zip file from http://beowulf.engl.uky.edu/~eft/binaries/ eclipse3.2EPPT-Mac-trial-20060501.zip and expand as usual (make an alias of the EPPT-Trial application icon for your desktop or tray). Be sure to install this new version, rather than simply updating a previous one!

2. Double-click the EPPT-Trial icon on the Desktop to Install the EPPT-Trial. We recommend that you install in the default folder, C:\eclipse3.2EPPT-trial, for the Trial version.

When you click Install, the components of the EPPT-Trial will begin installing in this folder and the program will alert you when the installation is complete:

3. After clicking OK, double-click the new EPPT-Trial Desktop icon to run the program (you should discard the Installer icon to avoid confusing the two later). The EPPT splash will open first, and then the EPPT Desktop with CVS Repositories and the Navigator.

4. To fill the EPPT Desktop with our editing tools and your project, you should first get the editing tools (or plugins, as Eclipse calls them) from Help > Software updates > Find and Install ...

Follow the instructions for Install/Update:

  • Click Next for "search for updates of the currently installed features;
  • Click Next to install the "Search Results";
  • Accept "Feature License" agreement and click Next;
  • Accept default "Install Location" of c:\eclipse3.2EPPT-trial by clicking Finish;
  • Accept "Jar verification" by clicking Install to download;
  • Click "Yes" to restart the workbench!

5. When the EPPT-Trial opens after the Restart, open the basic ImagText perspective (Eclipse calls the EPPT editing environments "perspectives") from the Window > Open Perspective > Other menu:

6. Choose ImagText from the "Select Perspective" menu, and the ImagText editing environment will open on the Desktop. The list of perspectives is your assurance that the plugin editing tools were installed and that EPPT-Trial should work properly.

7. Now you are now ready to open your own Project and start to work. Click the "CVS Repository" tab in the top menu to open the repositories.

In the CVSRepositories window on the left, click the pserver and HEAD, and then fill in your password.

The Trial Projects will then appear in a list. Click right on your project in the list, and choose Check Out the project. You must also check out the EPPT-HttpServer to benefit from the HTML presentation we provide (as a model) for each project. The EPPT-HttpServer folder also contains a useful JavaScript library. If you wish to check out the EPPT-Boethius project, too, you must also check out the EPPT-Schemas.

After checking out your project and the EPPT-HttpServer from the Repository, click the ImagText icon in the top menu, and you will find these folders in the newly opened Navigator.

Double-click your "ProjectName".ibee (Image-based Electronic Edition), and the project will appear on the Desktop, ready for tagging. After your project opens, click the tabs to the right of Navigator for xMarkup or TOC (table of contents) to access those features.

[We provide the EPPT software for free, but with no guarantees of continued maintenance. If you download and use this software, we hope and expect that you will report bugs as you find them and offer suggestions for useful Tutorials. We in turn will issue free software updates and additional Tutorials, announced on the EPPT-Users Listserv, as our limited time and resources permit.]
